New Monkey Species With Orange Lips Identified in DR Congo Forest
['Carlos Gonzalez']
Colombia One: News from Colombia and the World
The primate, named Colobus congoensis, stands out for its vivid orange lips, glossy black coat, white markings and deep roaring calls.
Scientists say it is only the fifth new African monkey species formally described in the last 75 years.
Scientists initially believed the animals belonged to a known colobus species because of their similar appearance, but laboratory analysis told a different story.
DNA sequencing showed that Colobus congoensis diverged from its closest living relative, the black colobus (Colobus satanas), between 3.4 and 5.8 million years ago.
Joshua Linder, an anthropologist and president of The Forest Collective, described the finding as exceptional because discoveries of previously unknown monkey species have become increasingly rare.
