Punishment for care worker who shared degrading images of dementia patients must be reviewed - The Irish News view

IT is difficult to imagine a more disturbing breach of trust than the case involving a senior nursing assistant who filmed demeaning videos of patients with advanced dementia when they were under treatment in Craigavon Area Hospital.
Ciara Corvan (28) pleaded guilty to seven charges at Craigavon Crown Court earlier this week, and was sentenced to a two-year probation order and 100 hours of community service, in the first prosecution of its kind in the region.
When the details of her offences, as reported in yesterday’s Irish News, are considered, there will be a widespread view that her punishment was unduly lenient in the circumstances and deserves to be reviewed.
Judge Patrick McGurgan highlighted how Corvan had let down her patients and said: “Each family who placed a loved one in care as a last resort expects them to be treated with respect and dignity.”
The public needs to have confidence that dementia sufferers will receive the highest possible standards of treatment within our health service, and can never be left at the mercy of malicious individuals like Corvan.
