Mumbai: Apex Hospitals successfully treated a rare and complex pediatric mandibular fracture in a 4-year-old boy, using a minimally invasive approach in maxillofacial surgery. The surgical team, led by Dr. Vinod Pal, MDS (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery), Fellowship in Head & Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery, performed a closed reduction with intermaxillary fixation (IMF) using modified Gunning splints. This conservative method avoids open surgery and preserves natural jaw growth. Customized pediatric Gunning splints were applied to stabilize the jaw for two weeks, followed by elastic guidance for one week. Using modified Gunning splints, we can stabilize the jaw, restore occlusion, and protect growth, all without invasive procedures.
