Plans for a 176-unit rental housing development in downtown Kelowna are dead after BC Housing determined the project was no longer financially viable. In a statement, BC Housing said it made the "difficult decision" to cancel the redevelopment of the provincially owned site at 1451 Bertram St., which had been planned in partnership with M'akola Housing Society and the City of Kelowna. "Since the project was first proposed, market conditions in Kelowna have changed significantly, with rents stabilizing, demand softening and significantly higher vacancy rates," BC Housing said. BC Housing did not indicate what, if anything, will replace the cancelled project on the site.
