We returned to Kawapal late evening, having walked more than 28 km through dense forest and streams, encompassing 3,833 hectares of customary forest. We had completed just one of the steps in the often challenging process of claiming CFR rights under the Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006! Why must communities use a GPS and jump through other hoops to map and claim their forest rights? For instance, Chhattisgarh reports having distributed 52,000 CFR rights titles, and Madhya Pradesh almost 28,000. Collectors in eastern Maharashtra pioneered this approach for CFR rights implementation, taking advantage of the administrative geography of community forests there.
