An advisory issued by the Delhi Police is executed by the Delhi Metro, and an entire node of the city’s transit network is brought to a halt within hours, if not minutes.
The pattern is strikingly specific to the metro system and in contrast against the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus system where nothing equivalent happens.
The diffuseness of the public bus system makes it nearly impossible to switch it off with a “single” instruction.
Such a vision never extended to the bus system, which has been underfunded for years, is permanently overcrowded, and organisationally fragmented.
The Delhi metro is a real feat of engineering and planning, and one of the most outstanding pieces of urban infrastructure built in independent India.
