Market Watch: August Nymex Extends Losing Streak

August Nymex gas futures retreated for a fourth straight session Tuesday, settling 10.5¢ lower at $2.662 per million Btu.
“The market is feeling the weight of two powerful forces: record US production and a cooling of the intense summer heat that had been propping up power-burn demand,” Price Futures Group analyst Phil Flynn said.
“Storage levels remain comfortable — inventories are running roughly 6% above the five-year average — giving the market little reason to bid prices higher.”
With the August contract set to expire Wednesday, “the timing mismatch between softer prompt fundamentals and warmer conditions later in the forecast is limiting buying interest,” Gelber & Associates noted.
