The house was built of Bermuda limestone during the era when Bermuda ran the salt trade in Turks & CaicosSome of the oldest fortunes in this country were made in the Caribbean. From the 1670s, we ran the salt trade in the Turks Islands and held it for a century and a half. In 1710, when the Spanish and French took the islands, Bermuda did not petition London. We fought a war over Caribbean salt. It was fine when a few were able to profit from the salt, the sugar and the slaves of the Caribbean.
