Australian motorists will pay more for fuel following confirmation by treasurer Jim Chalmers that the federal government's current fuel excise discount will end at midnight this Sunday (August 2, 2026).
"That fuel excise relief will end midnight on Sunday and that's because it has played a really important role helping to take some of the sting out of these cost-of-living pressures," Mr Chalmers said.
That compares with 181.0cpl in the week ending March 1, 2026, before the federal government announced its fuel excise relief package, when the four-week average was 171.2cpl.
Average national retail diesel prices were 180.9cpl in the week ending March 1.
By the week ending July 26, the AIP reported the national average had climbed to 227.2cpl.
