Thunderstorms brought down a roof over gas pumps, flooded roads and toppled trees on Tuesday night as they battered the Washington, D.C., area with downpours and strong winds. The canopy of a Mobil gas station on Georgia Avenue fell over, trapping a white van under one of the poles. Storms prompted tornado warningsThe severe storms prompted several tornado and thunderstorm warnings Tuesday evening, and the D.C. region was under a tornado watch -- and a thunderstorm watch -- until 10 p.m. The storms brought reports of golf-ball-size hail and rainfall rates of more than 4 inches per hour.
