Azerbaijan has banned two Iranian media outlets — Sahar and Mehr — after Tehran designated its state-run TV channel, AzTV, a ‘hostile media outlet’. Iran’s designation of AzTV as a hostile media outlet dates to a 13 July memo published by the Iranian Intelligence Ministry. It cited Azerbaijan’s media law, which stipulates that if other states imposed restrictions on media outlets registered in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan may in turn impose similar restrictions on that state’s media. According to IranWire, an Iranian media outlet operating in exile, the list includes a number of media outlets, media personalities, and social media pages. It is unclear why AzTV was singled out among Azerbaijani or other South Caucasian media outlets.
