Sector bodies have backed prime minister Andy Burnham’s plans to put technical education on an equal footing with academic subjects. Yesterday (28 July), Burnham unveiled a series of sweeping changes to the education system with the launch of new technical education routes. From Year 10, students will have the chance to combine core academic subjects – including English, maths and science – with a technical education, linked to the jobs available in their area. “Rics can contribute its expertise in surveying standards, education, careers guidance and professional progression to help turn these pathways into credible routes to a rewarding career.” “Today’s announcement is an important recognition that construction and other skilled trades deserve to be valued every bit as highly as traditional academic routes,” he said.
