On Saturday evening, July 25, emergency services rushed to cordon off parts of the town centre after discovering what the force called "suspicious packages" left outside three busy hospitality venues. Thames Valley Police said they were "made aware" of the first package outside The Botanist bar on King Street/Market Place at around 6pm. No evacuations were deemed necessary near The Botanist, and the cordon around the Market Place area was lifted by 11am the following morning (Sunday, July 26). The case was sent to the Crown Court after an initial hearing at Reading Magistrates' Court on Monday morning, July 27.
