In yesterday’s special meeting, a unanimous vote by Westminster City Council to pursue a November referendum that’ll give city voters the chance to consider a 1% sales tax that’ll lower property taxes. There appears consensus that mayor and council will support at least a 20% reduction on property tax bills. A second reading of the referendum ordinance will be required in time to meet a mid-August deadline for adding the question to the November General Election ballot in the city. In the meantime, the council is being urged to come up with a list of improvements projects to be funded by the revenues from the addition of a 1% sales tax and use tax. In the view of Mayor Ramey, not allowing city voters the referendum will amount to a “disservice.”
