UN chief of human rights warns Israeli strikes in Lebanon may constitute international crimes
[]
JURIST – News
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk on Monday expressed concerns that the mass destruction and displacement caused by Israeli strikes against Lebanon could amount to international crimes.
Indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks by Israeli military forces alongside the usage of white phosphorus munitions have been condemned by rights groups.
Grave violations of IHL that amount to war crimes, such as willful killing and targeted attacks on civilians, are prosecuted by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The ICC has handled several cases of war crimes and IHL violations, including prosecutions of large-scale displacement, as Türk points out is actively occurring in Lebanon.
He indicated that his office and colleagues will remain on the ground “ready to support Lebanon in the promotion and protection of human rights for all.”
