Have Your Say On The Crimes (Virginity Testing Practices) Amendment BillThe Governance and Administration Committee is calling for submissions on the Crimes (Virginity Testing Practices) Amendment Bill.
The bill seeks to protect vulnerable women and girls by amending the Crimes Act 1961 to create new offences relating to virginity testing and the related practice of hymenoplasty.
Anyone who performs, or causes to be performed, on any person, any act involving virginity testing practices, would be liable to a maximum of 5 years’ imprisonment.
Virginity testing involves the inspection of female genitalia to determine whether a person has had vaginal intercourse.
It further states that “women and girls are often coerced or forced into this honour-based abuse against their will”.
