There is sense of dissatisfaction within the Tory party about what people see as Badenoch’s lacklustre performance since she took over as leader last year.
One centrist Tory MP played down the idea of a challenge and said they expected conference to be “quiet”.
“I don’t think there’s an appetite for histrionics and drama at all,” they said.
But Tory MPs think Jenrick will be circumspect when it comes to how he conducts himself in Manchester.
The centrist Tory MP said: “I don’t think he would do anything like Andy Burnham.
