The pedestrianised but very busy street outside Harrods, next to the tube station entrance, is being refurbished to reduce the clutter and create more space for pedestrians. Although fully pedestrianised in 2004 when the new tube station entrance was created, some of the space is occupied by food stalls and with the tube station entrance next to the department store, it can be a bit of a muddle with crowds trying to get around each other. Designed by landscape architects Andy Sturgeon Design, the practice behind the recent transformation of Sloane Street, the project aims to improve the area while keeping pedestrian routes clear. The seating has been integrated into the planting areas, with varying seat heights to improve accessibility and encourage people to stop and spend time in the space, without obstructing pedestrian movement. Harrods managing director Michael Ward said the scheme would create “an inclusive, welcoming communal space” while incorporating sustainable features including climate-resilient planting.
