Ukraine and Iran’s foreign ministers spoke by phone this week about last weekend’s deadly Caspian Sea strike, and each side described the call differently afterward. Acting Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Tuesday, in what Ukrainska Pravda called their first-ever direct contact. He also pressed Araghchi to end Tehran’s support for Moscow’s invasion, calling that war illegal and saying it must stop. Was assured by Ukrainian FM @andrii_sybiha that the attack on an Iranian ship was unintentional and Ukraine seeks no escalation. — Seyed Abbas Araghchi (@araghchi) July 28, 2026Sybiha’s own statement never calls the strike unintentional.
