Curliss John Abshire, 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 26, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Aug. 14, 1935, in Gueydan, La., to Eledier Pierre Abshire and Auraline I. Hebert Abshire. Curliss graduated from Gueydan High School in 1954, where he played football, basketball and baseball throughout his four years of High School. Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Deborah “Debbie” Nunez (Ellis) of Grand Lake, Danny Ray Abshire (Cindy) of Iota, Mike Abshire (Deanne) of Lake Charles, and Jill Abshire (Bryan Cameron) of Blue Point, N.Y.; his grandchildren, Jacob Nunez (Laura), Stephanie Peloquin (Andy), Amanda Stratton (Justin), Chad Abshire (Taylor), Caleb Abshire, and Nick Abshire; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; “adopted” son, Randy Fruge (Michelle), and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Curliss is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Shirley Dee Abshire; his parents; his siblings, Stuna Breaux, Lillian Dillon and ‘Coach” Dallas Abshire, and his infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Abshire.
