My junior year of high school had just started, and I didn’t know how I was going to survive. Whenever people talk about the “high school experience,” I feel mournful because I will never get those years back. In 1934, Romanian philosopher Emil Cioran published “On the Heights of Despair,” inspired by his bouts of insomnia, depression and insanity. Cioran describes man as the “insomniac animal,” expressing that “there is not another animal in the entire creation that wants to sleep yet cannot.” He also finds offhanded, sarcastically written “blessings” of insomnia: “Insomnia kills off the multiplicity and diversity of the world, leaving you prey to your private obsessions.
