Industrial legacy triggers extensive ground engineering works on Transpennine Route Upgrade sites

Extensive and varying ground engineering interventions are being carried out across the West of Leeds section of the Transpennine Route Upgrade project to mitigate potential risks to the railway caused by the area’s industrial legacy.
Due to its scale, TRU has been divided into three programmes – West of Leeds, Leeds Central and East of Leeds – with different alliances appointed to each one.
The Alliance’s team had to tackle numerous geotechnical challenges caused by the varying ground conditions, industrial legacy, the presence of landfills infilled with asbestos and site constraints.
The area’s industrial past means there is a lot of poor quality made ground, as well as former mine workings.
Deighton StationIndustrial legacy has necessitated ground engineering interventions at the Deighton Station site of TRU’s W3 section as well.
