(ABC 6 News)–The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says prolonged hot weather is causing an increase in fish deaths across the state as lakes, rivers and streams reach unusually high temperatures.
The DNR has received 220 fish mortality reports from different waterbodies across the state so far this year, including reports as far south as Albert Lea.
Cold-water fish such as cisco and trout are especially vulnerable, while northern pike, muskellunge and larger fish have also been affected during the recent heat wave.
The DNR says anyone who spots a fish kill should report it through the agency’s website.
Officials also encourage homeowners to reduce nutrient runoff into waterways and maintain natural shorelines to improve fish habitat.
