The former Zen Japanese and Oriental restaurant, located at the corner of High Street and Bernard Street, will be transformed into a mixed-use scheme featuring a ground floor commercial unit and seven one-bedroom flats.
The building has been vacant for six years and has suffered damage from two fires in May 2024 and June 2023.
The approved plans include a two-storey infill extension and the rebuilding of the first floor, along with refuse and cycle storage facilities.
The statement added: "This will drive significant widespread benefit to this important section of the High Street."
The application describes the scheme as a "pragmatic approach" to bringing the site back into use after multiple setbacks with previous redevelopment plans.
