I knew a guy who never worked a day in his life, yet somehow survived by playing the benefit system. He even claimed he was doing the country a service by not taking the job of someone who actually wanted to work. We all know that some people on benefits are playing the system, but we also know that many, especially the elderly, could claim support yet never do. When politicians talk about tightening the rules, they rarely admit that making the system tougher for the few who abuse it also makes life harder for the many who genuinely need it. More hoops to jump through, more forms, more delays, and more suspicion aimed at people who have done nothing wrong.
