Two pediatric trauma leaders at OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois are raising concerns about the growing number of serious injuries linked to e-bikes and e-scooters. Physicians say many crashes happen because young riders lack experience handling the speed of e-bikes and understanding traffic rules. Lee Murrin, APRN, a family medicine provider at OSF Saint Katharine Center for Health in Amboy, regularly sees unsafe riding habits. “I often see young children riding e-bikes around town without helmets, and sometimes even two children riding on the same bike,” Murrin said. Class 3 e-bikes, capable of speeds up to 28 mph, require riders to be at least 16 years old and possess a driver’s license.
