Plans to improve services for current and prospective smart meter customers have been praised by the energy infrastructure trade body BEAMAOfgem has announced it will offer automatic compensation to people facing long waits for smart meter installation or repair from next year. In response to the announcement, BEAMA chief executive Yselka Farmer said problems with the smart meter programme had undermined its potential to reduce carbon emissions. Ofgem said Government data indicated over 90% of installed smart meters are working correctly, but its new plans will offer automatic compensation if their meter is not operating in smart mode for more than 90 days. Compensation will also be given to those having to wait more than six weeks for installation or for failed installations. Under the new rules, when customers report problems, their suppliers will be required to provide a ‘resolution plan’ within five working days.
