Tararua District Supplies More Drinking Water Than Manawatū NeighboursJuly 28, 2026A first-of-its-kind report has found the Tararua District supplies more drinking water per connection than many of its neighbours.
Despite being a rural council with a population of less than 20,000, Tararua District Council supplies 1119 litres per connection per day (Lcd) of drinking water in 2024/25, above the average consumption volume of 1050Lcd per day.
Tararua supplied more drinking water than much larger populations, such as Wellington Water LTD, which accessed 966Lcdm, and Palmerston North, which accessed 1102Lcd of the supply.
Despite also serving a much smaller population, Rangitīkei District Council supplied 1004Lcd of drinking water during 2024/25.
Further south, Horowhenua District Council used 854Lcd of the supply and Manawatū District Council with its in-house water services supplied less at 837Lcd per day.
