Heat pumps one of several critical technologies – along with the expanded use of lower carbon heat network – being backed by the government to decarbonise homes and other buildings. This would amount to an eleven-fold increase in the 55,000 heat pump systems installed nationally in 2022, based on data from the Heat Pump Association (HPA). The NAO added that the government was currently working to install up to 1.6 million heat pump systems a year by 2035. The report concluded that the government’s assumptions and predictions about heat pump supply and the growth of the market “were optimistic”. These changes had resulted in some utilities companies looking to offer heat pump installations starting from £500, said the NAO.
