Subway newsstands once served as bustling hubs where straphangers could grab a newspaper, a magazine, or a snack while waiting for their train to arrive.
A group of creatives, led by artist and writer Al Mullen, have come together to take over an empty newsstand on the Brooklyn-bound B/D/F/M platform at the West 4 St subway station.
Mullen said the point of the installation is to engage subway riders for a short period of time during their busy days.
Commuters who stop by the newsstand will also get the opportunity to step into a photobooth to take “subway aura photos,” Mullen said.
“If it’s dark green, you’re a 4/5/6 [train],” Mullen said.
