Cumbria Fire and Rescue responded to the blaze at around 6.50pm on Monday with 'a number of garages' involved in the incident at Salthouse Mills. "Thank you to the public who followed advice from emergency services to close windows and doors during the response as a precaution due to smoke." It is not the first time that Salthouse Mills has been at the centre of similar fires. The building was known as Barrow Paper Mills in 1919, previously used by a chemical wood pulp company in 1892. Land at the former Salthouse Mills site was later used as an industrial estate before being earmarked for a large-scale housing development.
