Survey finds majority of UK adults unwilling to cover costs of heat pump transition, even after receiving Boiler Upgrade Scheme grantsPolling by the energy trade body the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA) has found only 4% of UK adults are unwilling to pay average installation costs for heat pumps. Even if households receive the £7,500 grant available under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), said the EUA, average heat pump installation costs are still £5,500. EUA chief executive Mike Foster said heat pumps have a role to play in decarbonising homes – “especially for the well off” – but the majority are simply unwilling to spend the sums needed. “But if year after year they signal an unwillingness to spend the sums needed for a heat pump, then other technologies are going to be needed to get to net zero,” he said. Figures released by the European Heat Pump Association last month showed that the UK market was one of only three to grow last year, but that it remained 14 times smaller than Norway’s.
