Checks Were Stolen From Mailboxes, Seven People Allegedly Turned Them Into Fake Deposits

The Fictitious Checks Went Into Multiple AccountsProsecutors allege that the defendants deposited the fictitious checks into multiple financial accounts. All Seven Defendants Face 11 Federal CountsA federal grand jury returned the indictment in June 2026, and the case was unsealed on July 20. Bowman, Hill, McClinton, Wilcox, Thomas, Smallwood and Satterfield are each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and 10 counts of mail fraud. The federal court calendar scheduled initial appearances and arraignments for Hill, McClinton, Smallwood, Thomas and Wilcox on July 29. Postal Inspection Service says stolen checks may be altered or used to produce counterfeit copies with different payees and amounts.
