This is according to the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals’ (ISEP) 2026 State of the Profession report, which is based on responses from more than 600 sustainability and environmental professionals alongside expert interviews.
It found that organisations are increasingly asking sustainability teams to deliver measurable outcomes with fewer dedicated resources.
While investment has come under pressure, the survey also found evidence that environmental performance continues to improve in many organisations.
More respondents reported reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, waste and water consumption than a year ago, suggesting that sustainability efforts are continuing despite a tougher operating environment.
