Police respond to possible case of “swatting”
['Matthew Mccully']
Sherbrooke Record
Record Staff (HB)The Sherbrooke Police Service (SPS) believes a major operation on July 23 in Sherbrooke in response to a report of a violent incident may actually be linked to a phenomenon known as “swatting”.
The evidence gathered to date indicates the call may be a case of “swatting”.
Swatting involves making a false report to emergency services with the aim of triggering a large-scale police response against a targeted individual.
In this case, preliminary findings suggest that the false report was made following a dispute related to a transaction on an online gaming platform.
The Sherbrooke Police Service reminds the public that any false report made to emergency services is subject to criminal charges.
