“They became successful and became ridiculous”: The late 1970s band Ray Manzarek could never work withRay Manzarek undoubtedly had a knack for finding a timeless, propulsive and electrifying lick on his Vox Continental combo organ, and, owing to his time in The Doors, he also knew a thing or two about working alongside a successful but ridiculous, put-on and over-developed persona. As well as powering the Doors with his playing, Manzarek had also moved into the role of producer, with the band, as well. And though he must have had bands queueing up to recruit his keyboard wizardry, it was in the producer’s role that Manzarek really started working with other groups. They were actually a very good band, and Stephen Stills was there, and a lot of people were very interested in The Knack at the time. Yeah, obviously, because The Knack only went on to have two top ten singles and a number one selling album.
