October 4 1975The Secretary of State, Mr Merlyn Rees, last night signed an order outlawing the Ulster Volunteer Force from today. Mr Rees said that after the indiscriminate killings, for which the organisation admitted responsibility, it had become abundantly clear that the UVF “is still wedded to violence, including the murder of innocent citizens”. The UVF now join two other Loyalist organisations on the outlawed list, the Red Hand Commando and the Ulster Freedom Fighters. The Ulster Volunteer Force and its associated units view with detestation and abhorrence the continuation of the Government’s irresponsible and criminal attitude towards Republican and Communist violence in Ulster. Although he had de-proscribed the UVF in 1974, Merlyn Rees proscribed the Loyalist paramilitary group again following a wave of UVF bombings and shootings that caused the deaths of twelve people on 2 October 1975.
