I saw a Justice Files story in July with an item about the Heeney resident who got a letter claiming to be a final notice from the Assessor’s Office. Here’s another thing we want folks to know because scammers count on people not knowing it: your property information — ownership, assessed value, parcel details — is public information and mostly free to obtain. You can look it up yourself, for free, any time, through PrISM (that’s our Property Information Search and Maps tool). If a letter is asking you to pay for that, they’re trying to get one over on you. We can’t and shouldn’t undo the fact that this information is public as that’s part of what keeps government accountable.
