There is a critical need for stronger partnerships between local and state governments, says a new report. As funding has declined, local councils have faced severe budget shortfalls and increased cost-shifting pressures, which has led to a reduction in basic service delivery. A CPD report – Better Together – explores how stronger partnerships between local councils and state government can be a cost-effective, innovative way to strengthen local leadership and grow local government capability. “Local governments bring critical on-the-ground understanding of the issues affecting their communities, while state governments can bring public health expertise and statewide networks,” CPD policy adviser Esther Koh said. “Strong, active local-state partnerships enable councils to deliver quality services to the community, with flow-on effects for mental health, community safety, economic participation, and social cohesion.”
