(ABC 6 News)–Governor Tim Walz has signed an executive order prohibiting Minnesota state employees from using nonpublic to participate in online prediction markets.
The order comes after a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking a new state law that would have banned prediction markets.
The bipartisan legislation was set to take effect on Aug. 1 and would have made Minnesota the first state in the nation to prohibit the platforms.
“State employees serve the public and shouldn’t make money off insider information,” Walz said in a statement, adding that the executive order reinforces the state’s ethical standards.
Under the order, state agency employees are prohibited from using nonpublic or confidential information obtained through their jobs to trade on prediction markets.
