The council has granted planning permission for a package of external alterations to the market building at Spinning Gate, including a new entrance, a replacement roof with solar panels and a number of structural improvements.
According to the approved plans, the existing porch entrance on Gas Street will be demolished and replaced with a new full-height entrance.
The project forms part of Wigan Council's wider plans to modernise Leigh Market Hall and secure the future of the building.
According to the authority, the replacement roof will provide weatherproof and thermally insulated protection for traders and shoppers, while solar panels are expected to improve the building's energy efficiency.
The new entrance has been designed to raise the profile of the market and increase footfall, with improved visibility from Bradshawgate and contemporary signage.
