Since Jan. 1, officers have made more than 500 arrests downtown and have conducted nearly 2,000 bike and foot patrolsWhile calls for service have decreased overall, the Greater Sudbury Police Service said Tuesday calls related to mental illness have spiked in the last year.
It said calls “related to mental health and well-being have increased by 16 per cent, while requests for ambulance assistance have increased by 31 per cent.
Article contentThe police service said property-related crime remains a problem, with a 44 per cent increase in calls for service, compared to the same period in 2025.
“More than half of these calls are related to shoplifting incidents,” the GSPS shared.
The police service said it “recognizes the concerns raised by community members regarding open drug use, property crime, violent crime and social disorder in our downtown core.
