The car park opposite the Kirkstone Pass Inn, just north of Ambleside, has traditionally been free but fees were brought in last weekend. Jerry Huppert, a partner in the company Supreme Escapes, bought both the car park and the site of the inn in 2021 when they were put on the market. He said the newfound revenue from motorists would help him avoid passing on costs to guests at the holiday lets he owns opposite the car park or charging a higher lease to the pub. Mr Huppert said: “People were increasingly taking advantage of our car park for purposes it was never intended for which wasn't fair on those neighbouring businesses either. He claimed that every other car park in the area charged for parking so it made little sense for them to not do so.
