The NSW Food Authority said it conducts random surveillance testing on meat products for species identification and stated there has been no confirmed incident of horse meat found in products intended for human consumption.
The authority noted horse meat can be legally sold as food in Australia provided it is processed at a licensed abattoir.
A Wagga Wagga man, Adrian Talbot, was convicted in Wagga Wagga Local Court on two charges of operating an unlicensed knackery and unlicensed animal food transport van, following a multi-agency investigation involving Wagga Wagga City Council, the state Department of Primary Industries, Local Land Services, NSW Police and Racing NSW.
NSW Food Authority chief executive Andrew Davies said strict licensing and registration rules exist for processors of animal food, adding that the authority routinely inspects such facilities so the community can have confidence in the system.
What Happens NextThe NSW Food Authority said any complaints regarding illegal operations or product adulteration are investigated, with enforcement action taken where evidence of wrongdoing is found.
