"Human error remains one of the greatest risks in digital forensic investigations, making independent verification and documentation essential," the Scientific Working Group on Digital Evidence (SWGDE) says in its best-practice guidance. "Every stage in the handling of digital evidence must be documented and capable of independent verification to preserve confidence in the investigative process," the International Organization on Computer Evidence (IOCE) states in its principles for digital evidence. The case serves as a reminder that digital evidence may appear exact, but it still depends on careful human verification.
