For many patients, the first sign is a broken bone that seems to happen after a minor fall or everyday activity. Their nationwide Austrian study, published in Bone, suggests that many opportunities for early diagnosis are being missed. Hip fractures were the most likely to be linked with an osteoporosis diagnosis, particularly among older women. Women were more likely to receive an osteoporosis diagnosis together with other chronic diseases. Even so, the findings provide convincing evidence that many broken bones are missed warning signs of osteoporosis and that earlier screening could greatly improve long-term bone health.
