According to arrest records, Smith faces felony charges of domestic violence, terroristic threats, and false imprisonment. He fought Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight belt at UFC 235 in March 2019, losing by unanimous decision, and built a resume that also included wins over Alexander Gustafsson, Mauricio Rua, and Rashad Evans.
