The USCGC Eagle is sailing back into Newport this weekend, giving visitors a rare chance to step aboard one of the most iconic ships on the water. The towering 295-foot tall ship will dock at State Pier #9 next to Mary Ferrazoli Park from Friday, July 31 through Monday, August 3, with free public tours available. Homeported at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the Eagle trains future Coast Guard officers the old-fashioned way, relying on wind, waves and teamwork instead of modern automation. The ship last called on Rhode Island in 2022 during the Tall Ships America 50th anniversary celebration. The visit is especially fitting for Newport, home to several Coast Guard assets, including USCGC Tahoma, USCGC Campbell, USCGC Oak, as well as Station Castle Hill and Point Judith.
