The new findings suggest that alcohol use during pregnancy, including higher-risk drinking patterns, increased from 2011 through 2024. The study included 33,729 pregnant women who provided information on past-month alcohol use. The prevalence of current alcohol use increased from 9 percent in 2011–2012 to a peak of 15 percent in 2021–2022, before declining slightly to 14.5 percent in 2023–2024. Binge drinking and heavy drinking followed similar patterns, reaching 4.6 percent and 2 percent, respectively, by 2023–2024. Overall, the findings show that the prevalence of current alcohol use, binge drinking, and heavy drinking increased among pregnant women in the United States between 2011 and 2024.
