A recent randomized trial published in the Research and Innovation in Anesthesia in February 2026 reveals that intrathecal dexmedetomidine significantly outperforms fentanyl.
This superior adjuvant powerfully extends complete motor blockade to over 210 minutes and delays the need for postoperative pain relief to nearly 290 minutes.
Therefore, the researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind trial involving 60 eligible patients to compare the anesthetic effectiveness, hemodynamic changes, and side effects of adding dexmedetomidine versus fentanyl to spinal anesthesia.
• Motor Blockade Duration: Investigations revealed an extended motor block duration averaging 210.5 minutes with dexmedetomidine, greatly surpassing the 157 minutes noted in the fentanyl group.
